Who can apply?

The Romy Fund is currently oversubscribed. You can still apply and your case will be considered for when the fund reopens in May 2025. Thank you for your patience.

The Romy Fund grants wishes to children/young people 0-18 with life limiting illnesses and/or complex health needs. The Romy Fund may also be able to help families in hardship.

The Romy Fund can consider an application if:

  • You live in within the Melton Times circulation area (approx the borough of Melton Mowbray)

And

  • You are the parent or carer of a child with life limiting illnesses and/or complex health needs aged 18 or under who lives at home.

Many children/young people can wait for some time before they get a final diagnosis for their condition. Families may also be waiting for a decision about Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or Personal Independent Payment (PIP), the Romy Fund uses its own definition of disability to say whether it can help.

You do not need to wait for diagnosis for your child or for a DLA/PIP decision to make an application to The Romy Fund.

The Romy Fund retains discretion to decline an application where a family has a significant level of capital.

We try to help as many families as possible caring for a children with additional needs or ill health, and will usually only consider a grant application every 12 months from the date of the last grant. Although we do understand sometimes that the need for help can be greater especially if there is an emergency or critical situation relating to a child or young person with additional needs or ill health. If this happens we can be flexible and consider an application, our grants are discretionary and subject to available funding.

What happens next?

We will let you know that we have received your application by email.

We will then check that your family meet our eligibility criteria; this will involve checking the information you have given to us.

It usually takes around 4-6 weeks for us to make a decision, and this stage will contact you by email or telephone.

We cannot give grants for, or reimburse you for, any items you have already bought before getting a grant from us.

If you receive a grant for an item you no longer need, please contact us straight away so we can determine if we can help you in some other way.

The Romy Fund will investigate all allegations of misuse of grants or fraud if there is evidence to suggest that fraud has been committed.

How we will make your grant award?

Depending upon what you have asked for, we will award your grant in a number of different ways, for example:

  • On a payment card

  • In vouchers

  • Direct to the supplier

All of our grants are used only for the purpose they are given and must not be sold on for your own financial benefit.
